On a snowy Saturday evening the Farmingdale State Rams headed out to the Rinx for a long awaited showdown with Stony Brook (M1). While the teams have not matched up in the modern era, there is still history between these two squads. The Rams faced off against their former defenseman Ted Valenti for the first time while Rams captain Joe LaChase faced off against his former team for the first time.
Andrew Barron was between the pipes for the Rams in their biggest test of the season so far. Prior to the game, Rams head coach Joe Mazzie mentioned the importance of remaining focused in the intense moments of the game. As the stands of the Rinx filled up with fans from both sides, the Battle for Suffolk was ready to begin.
As the opening period rolled on it was the Rams who struck first with Thomas Ivers and Dylan Bridgwood springing the Rams to an early 2-0 lead stunning the home crowd. While Stony Brook would score towards the end of the first the Rams headed into the first intermission with a lead.
Following the game tying goal by Stony Brook, Tim Duffy would light the lamp for Farmingdale once again giving them the lead. In an unfortunate turn of events for Farmingdale, Stony Brook would quickly add two goals as the second period came to a close giving the Seawolves their first lead of the night and a 4-3 advantage heading into the third period.
After a quick strike by Stony Brook, the Rams were determined to even the score, off a great pass from Gavin Del-Groso, Thomas Ivers was able to fire one home for his second goal of the evening bringing the score to 5-4. After it looked like Stony Brook was ready to pull ahead 6-4, their goal was called back due to goalie interference keeping it a one goal game. Just past the halfway mark, Rams captain Joe LaChase would come through with one of his biggest goals as a Ram so far tying the game up at 5. The rest of the third period would go scoreless as the both Farmingdale and Stony Brook both received stellar goaltending in the final minutes of the third period.
The Battle of Suffolk would require overtime, where Freshman Peter Labos would score the overtime winner for Stony Brook which brought an unfortunate end to the Battle of Suffolk for the Farmingdale State Rams.
